Victory in Your Spiritual Battle

Gain victory in your spiritual battle through the power of prayer.

We all need deliverance, not just from a vague, undefined sense of evil, but from the Evil One himself who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy all who align themselves with God’s holy light and truth. If we are not in a spiritual battle right now, then we are either recovering from one or getting ready for the next one. The battle is part of the package of living in a fallen world groaning for its ultimate redemption (Ro 8:22-25).

We have been working our way through the Lord’s Prayer this month and we are nearing the end. Today, let’s examine “but deliver us from the Evil One“.

In the original language, the word often translated as  “evil” is actually a personal word.  A more accurate translation is “Evil One”. We are not asking God to protect us from vague undefined bad things.  Jesus was referring to a specific entity, namely the devil and the fallen angels who do his bidding.

Prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and a scourge for Satan.
~ John Bunyan

The devil is a terrible foe who seeks to kill, steal, and destroy (Jn 10:10). He prowls around like a hungry lion ready to pounce.

To ignore him is foolish and dangerous. God calls us to be alert (1 Pet 5:8). And He stands ever-ready to defend and deliver us. We only need to ask.

Win victory in your spiritual battle today through the mighty power of prayer.

Pick whichever of the three sections outlined below you currently find yourself or those you care about. It is possible to be in two or even all three in different areas of your life at the same time. Our enemy likes to launch successive attacks against us, kicking us while we’re down, and hitting hard again before we have a chance to regain our footing.

Protect Me BEFORE the ATTACK

You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property.
You have made him prosper in everything he does. Look how rich he is!
Job 1:10

Father God, I seek protection in you. You are my shelter and fortress. You are my hiding place. I run to you and I am safe. I would be foolish to leave myself undefended and open to attack. You long to protect me. Hide me in the shadow of your wings and cloak me from the enemy’s radar.

I know that your wall of protection is not a guarantee that I will never face calamity. My own attempts at righteousness will not earn me a pain-free life. I trust that anything that is allowed into my life has passed through your loving hands first and is permitted for my ultimate gain.

He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
Psalm 91:4, NLT

I seek shelter with you, Father God. You hide me in the secret places of your presence where the Evil One cannot get to me. I trust in your promises which never fail. The safest place I can be is with you.

I put on the Armor of God in preparation for any battle that faces me today.

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist,
with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation
and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray…
Ephesians 6:14-18

Belt of Truth (Jn 17:17)
Breastplate of Righteousness (Mt 6:33)
Ready Feet (Is 52:7)
Gospel of Peace (Col 3:15)
Shield of Faith (Heb 11:1)
Helmet of Salvation (Acts 4:12)
Sword of the Spirit, Word of God (Heb 4:12)

Sustain Me DURING the BATTLE

I cry to you, Lord;
I say, “You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.”
Listen to my cry,
for I am in desperate need;
rescue me from those who pursue me,
for they are too strong for me.
Set me free from my prison,
that I may praise your name.
Then the righteous will gather about me
because of your goodness to me.
Psalm 142:5-7

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 5:6-11

I know that in this world, not all evil can be avoided. I will have trials but I rejoice that you have overcome the world.

I ask you to sustain and protect us during this attack. I know you tell the enemy, “This far and no further.” You limit the enemy’s attacks. Satan is never able to do all he wants to do.

I am frail, weak, and made only of dust mixed with your breath. I need your strength and power to resist Satan and oppose the evil that lurks within me and sneaks around me. I submit myself to your protection by doing all you tell me to do.

You are My Shield, My Refuge, My Fortress, My Strong Deliverer, and My Rear Guard. I know I am never alone in the midst of my trials for you go before, behind, and beside me.

When the enemy rains down his arrows upon all that is dear to me, give me the courage to lift my shield of faith and fight in the shade. Fortify my faith to stand strong by your power against the devil and his demons, knowing I never stand alone or in vain.

I don’t foolishly take on the forces of evil in my own name or with my own strength. I don’t wrestle with the devil. I admit my enemy is stronger than me, but you are infinitely mightier than he. I call out to you and you overcome the Evil One for me. I run to you for sanctuary.

In you alone we stand. Unless you preserve and protect us, we will not last a single hour.

“No weapon forged against you will prevail,
and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
and this is their vindication from me,”
declares the Lord.
Isaiah 54:17

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.  We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
2 Corinthians 4:7-9

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. Isaiah 58:8-9

Thank you for seeing me through this trial. I may have lost a battle or received heavy losses, but I rest in confidence that you have already won the war.

Heal my wounds and remove my bitterness. Deliver me from any hatred, lies, bitterness, a spirit of revenge, depression, fear, anxiety, bondage, disunity, distrust, slander that may threaten to creep up on me because of my injuries. Help me remember I don’t fight flesh and blood. People are never my real enemy. They are the ones you have called me to love.

There is nothing you can’t redeem.
Bring victory out of loss.
Replenish what has been devoured.
Resurrect what has been killed.
Restore what has been stolen.
Rebuild what has been destroyed.

I am down but not out. Enable me to rise again. Heal my wounds. Make me stronger than I was before.

Help me to persevere and  re-engage in the battle. Get me back in the fight.

“All prayer is warfare. Every prayer that gains ground for God’s kingdom loses ground for the enemy. To pray is to be locked in combat with spiritual forces. Spiritual warfare is not a single type of praying; prayer is warfare. There is no reason for this to be an intimidating thought. The two opposing sides in this warfare are not equal. Satan’s army is pitifully weak and small compared to God’s.”
