Five-Minute Friday

I’m starting a new experiment today.  I’m joining Kate Motaung and a group of writers who write for 5 minutes every Friday about a single word.  We are not allowed to edit or overthink it.  Just write what we think about the word of the day for only 5 minutes.  Today’s word is Follow.

Go.

In this age of rampant social media, we spend a lot of time following others and checking to see who’s following us on our various accounts.  But how much do we think about who is following us and who we are following in real life?

I know one important answer to that.  My children.  They are watching me every day. They are following me.

And it’s not just our children.  We never know who might be watching us.  Who might be influenced by how we live our lives.

Where am I headed?  I’m I going to a place I would want to lead others?

And who am I following?  I desire to follow Jesus with all my heart.  Who else do I look to to show me a pattern to life or a way I want to go?

I’ve got to be deliberate about who I follow because there are others following me.

Stop.

Wow!  That was harder than I expected.  My perfectionism gets in my way so easily and I want to go back and edit and add and delete.  Makes me wonder where else in life my perfectionism is holding me back and keeping me from getting the job done.  This is a fun and insightful exercise.  I will definitely do it again.  You should try it!  Just click the Five Minute Friday button on the sidebar to read more.

Blessings, Elizabeth

  1. “We never know who might be watching us. Who might be influenced by how we live our lives.” Amen! Challenging thoughts but ones we need to consider. We each leave a savour of Christ in this world; a fragrance of His Presence lingers wherever we do. You have given us much to ponder here, Elizabeth. Thank you for stopping by my blog too. It’s a delight to read your words and a pleasure to meet you. The FMF community is a very welcoming and accepting one. You’ll be hooked now! God bless you 🙂 x

  2. Oh man, I always go over the five minute time limit. I have issues with time constraints with it comes to writing! Ha! But I figure that writing is my therapy. There is just something about it that soothes the soul.

Thank you for the reminder that we never know who is watching us. Like you, my children are watching constantly and I need to be sure I am pointing them to Jesus with each step I take.

only and all grace and peace,
    Carrie

  3. Thanks for the sweet encouragement Elizabeth! Welcome to the FMF community! You did GREAT! And yes, I cheat a little too…sometimes I edit and sometimes I take a teeny bit longer than 5 minutes, lol. But we’re writing and that’s what’s important.

  4. Welcome to the Five Minute Friday community! It IS hard to write it all in five minutes (I might go over a bit in order to finish a thought at times, and sometimes I pre-write in my head whilst out exercising 😉 ). You are so right about our biggest and most important ‘following’ being our children. It’s a sacred calling to keep my own life right with God so that my children (ok, they aren’t so much children any more) and my students know who I follow.
