We all have to fight temptation many times during our lives. Sheer will power alone is not enough to secure victory over sin. But we don’t fight alone. With the Holy Spirit within us and Jesus interceding for us, we can walk in victory before God. Here are some verses and prayers to strengthen your resolve and highlight your help.
Today’s post is an expansion of the “Lead Us Not Into Temptation” page of the prayer guide ebook. These five steps are mentioned briefly in your guide, but I have included an example prayer for each section.
1. Thank you for understanding my weakness.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet he did not sin.
Jesus, you understand this tension within me between wanting to do the right thing and also desiring to do the wrong thing (Ro 7:15-25) . You remember that I am but dust (Ps 103:14). You are merciful with my shortcomings; you bathe my faults with grace and cover my sin by your own blood. Support me when I am weak and encourage me to stand strong in faith.
2. Protect me from sin.
You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
Protect me from evil influences and desires. Be a barrier between me and the traps devil has set for me (Job 1:10). Rescue me from that prowling lion who seeks to devour me (1 Peter 5:8). Make me wise to that sly snake who whispers his age old lies into my heart and mind (Gen 3:1). Hurl down the great dragon that leads the world astray (Rev 12:9).
3. Help me do my part to keep myself from trouble.
Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
Father God, rescue me from myself and from all that pulls me away from You. Save me from my propensity to sabotage my own life and self-destruct what is in my own best interest. I want to do what is pleasing to You, but I also want to please myself. Help me lay down the good to grab hold of the best.
I own my responsibility in keeping myself free from temptation. Remind me to be discerning about what I read, watch, and listen to; as well as where I go and who I associate with. I know that companion of fools suffers harm. Reveal to me any companions that I’m better off without. Show me wise people to walk with that I may grow in wisdom and maturity (Pr 13:20). I thank you that by staying close to you, I have the wisest companion of all.
4. Remind me to stay alert to the schemes of the enemy.
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering you are.
1 Peter 5:8-9, NLT
Open my eyes to see temptation for what it really is—a trap my enemy has set for me to drag me down with him (2 Cor 2:11). Help me recognize and reject the lies he spreads and replace those thoughts with your truth (Jn 8:44). They have no place in my mind. Reveal any area in my life where sin is crouching at the door waiting to devour me (Gen 4:7).
Alert me to any traps and snares the enemy has set for me. Cause them to backfire on him. Grant me wisdom to discern the schemes his is planning against me. Make me wise and alert enough to perceive danger and proactive enough to avoid it if possible.
A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.
5. Strengthen me to resist the devil.
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you.
You are always available to help me, but I can’t just ask you to help me not fall into temptation and then cruise through life on autopilot. I must do my part to resist the devil. He is nothing compared to you, but if I open the door and let him in, he will wreck my life. Grant me Your strength to resist the devil as You did (Mt 4:1-11). I am not strong enough to resist temptation on my own.
6. Show me the way of escape you provide.
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
1 Corinthians 10:13, NLT
Thank you for providing a way of escape when I get cornered. Help me recognize it and give me courage to take it when I need to.
Make me bold enough to turn around when my heart is headed where I know it shouldn’t be going. Alert me whenever I am off course and help me alter my course. I know I am often not where I should be, nor headed in the right direction to reach my desired destination.
Reveal the right path to me clearly and at the proper time. Grant me the courage to go a different way than the people around me if that is what you call me to do. The only one I want to conform to is Christ. Release me from my desire to conform to anyone else’s standards or expectations.
Let me not be like the dog that returns to its own vomit. Only a fool repeats his folly (Pr 26:11) I want to learn from my failures and not repeat my mistakes. Help me grow in prompt and complete obedience to you. Strengthen and enable me to do what is right especially when it’s hard because that’s when it matters most.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
Matthew 16:24, NIV
