Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Guard your heart
Our hearts are not our own. We have given them over to Christ who has won them through His sacrifice for us. We are His bride and we must be vigilant to guard our hearts until we see Him face to face. We must stand strong against and never give in to unbelief, sin, fear, or worry. If we guard our hearts well, God’s goodness will flow from us to bless others. Our hearts are the source from which the rest of our lives flow.
Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me… the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:1, 26-27
When we guard against unbelief, salvation flows from our hearts.
Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You.
When we guard against sin, righteousness flows from our hearts.
He shall say: “Hear, Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them.
When we guard against fear, courage flows from our hearts.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
When we guard against worry, peace flows from our hearts.
The Wellspring of Life
Proverbs 4:23 says the reasons it’s so important to guard our hearts is because everything else we do in life flows from our hearts. If we allow our heart’s spring to become polluted with poisonous contaminates of this world then we won’t have a cup of clear water to offer a thirsty traveler. If we drink deeply of God and keep our well filled with His Living Water, we will have an abundance of goodness for ourselves with plenty left over to splash on to others around us
A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.
